What would a Scotch Roman look like if it were a sans? Scatch is a modulated grotesque that taps into historical models from a different genre: it explores the question of what happens to a Scotch Roman when it has no serifs. Scatch is a Scotch Sans – a Roman minus the serifs. Some of the earliest sans serifs were derived from existing types by cutting away the serifs. The design process of Scatch was not quite that simple and straightforward. It pursued a similar objective, though: the long serifs had to go, but many other characteristics of the genre were to be preserved.
